Gyre: Regarding a Tragedy of the Commons. 

 

2009 -2011.     Plastic flotsam, ink jet photographs, video projection, water column sculpture.

 

400 SF to 4000 SF for various installation configurations.

 

​Plastic is believed to constitute 90% of all rubbish floating in the oceans causing the deaths of more than a million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals each year.

The material for Gyre came from two expeditions to Kamilo Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2009 and 2010.

Gyre has four installation components. They can be uased together, in parts or singly.

 

​Part One: Photograph/Object Pacific Gyre.      inkjet photographs, 20 x 20 inches, are exhibited with the  actual objects depicted.

 

Part Two: Kamilo: Twisted Waters . 2011, 6 minute loop. High definition video and sound. From 4 ft to 20 ft. in width.   Shot at Kamilo Beach. 

 

​Part Three: Ghost Nets.  Beach scavenged fishing net parts.  Plastic fiber, 2 ft. to 25 ft. in length. Up to 25 Ghost nets for installation.

Part Four: Water Column, 2010, base is 5 x 5 x 3 feet high and column is 2 x 2 x 9 feet high. Plexiglas, plywood, sound insulation panels, plastic tubing, water circulation pump, plastic flotsam, water, 120 vac power connection.
