Background.  Plastic is believed to constitute 90 per cent of all rubbish floating in the oceans. 80% comes from land. The UN Environment  Programme (UNEP) estimated (probably low) in 2006 that every square mile of ocean contains 46,000 pieces of floating plastic and also estimates that plastic debris causes the deaths of more than a million seabirds every year, as well as more than 100,000 marine mammals. According to The UNEP it’s simply not possible to clean a section of ocean that spans the area of a continent and extends 100 feet below the surface.

The material for Gyre came from two expeditions to Kamilo Beach on the Big Island of Hawaii in 2009 and 2010.

There are four installation components of GYRE which could be seen together as a large multi-faceted exhibition or in small combinations.
